an image of a modal from DaVinci Resolve
The original modal; can you see what's wrong?

Context

I recently encountered the ‘Upgrade Project Library’ modal in DaVinci Resolve 17. Immediately on seeing it, I knew I wanted to write up this example.

Both the button text and the modal title are fine; if I had already gone through this process before, they would give me enough information to make the right decision.

As a user that hadn’t encountered this issue before, I read the description text hoping it would tell me what was going on.

Instead, I got a warning that implies I might lose my current work, and that this is an irreversible step (😨).

The problem

So, what’s the problem?

This modal provides no explanation of why the library needed to be upgraded (I still don’t know, but I think it was because I upgraded the software itself, the modal jus† appeared without prompting), what upgradig entails, or what the benefits of upgrading are (or the risks of not upgrading).

The solution?

Write better description text for the modal, thinking about a first time user’s understanding and what questions they might have about the process.

I’d love to write an example for this, but despite clicking the ‘upgrade’ button, I still don’t know what it did!
